Dual boot NT and RH 7.2..
 

All,

My last thread made me realize that I should ask this.. I have a thinkpad with nt loaded and RH linux 7.2 loaded.. both boot... only linux needs a boot disk.. i have been messing with the MBR with NT and cannot get the Linux to boot without the boot disk.. i have added the c:bootsect.lnx to NT boot and have added the file to the root on the linux partition... what am i missing?? i loaded GRUB at install .. have no idea where that went.. but it never showed up..

2 possible solutions- In the boot.ini is should read C:\<bootsectfilname.ext>
or c:\bootsect.lnx. Needs the backslash
or from linux, 2. Does your HDD have an extra partition at the very beginning? i.e. like Compaqs, with the BIOS manager at the beginning of the drive? if so have LILO boot to hda2 instead of hda1

I have installed my system with RH 7.2 and I have forgotten which boot loader i had chosen. How can i check if my loader is grub or LILO? or can it be both? If let say there can be both, does my sytem boot with grub or LILO? How can I tell?

Jester.. how can i find out where the bios manager resides.. and i knoiw that i chose GRUB during install how can i test to see if that even works.. or even if it loaded.. did LILO install with that?? or do i need to load LILO too??

You should be able to tell what boot loader you are using by rebooting and paying attention. I have never used grub so I don't know what it looks like. Only one of them runs unless you have some major bootsector overlaps. There should be some boot load configurator that comes with RH. Mandrake has one that is specific to MDK, and I am a newbie just the same. so finding it in RH, look in the "start" menu. lol You should find something that resembles a system configuration app.

oh my god that was too easy.. i cant believe that i missed that so many times.. when i entered the # DD if=... of=.. i entered the wrong boot sector.. hda7 instead of hda6...

since i never saw a boot loader show up other than NTs i didnt now if grub was installed.. but when this was resolved GRUB showed up on boot.. it didnt show up with the boot disk..

time, patience, and a whole lot of coffee solves all...
