Dual Boot Install Questions

I installed Red Hat 9 and then installed Windows XP, formatting the unpartitioned space using NTFS. After installing XP I can no longer boot to my Linux install. When I go into drive management in Windows I see all three partitions. The partition I installed Linux to and the partition I used for swap partition are there but listed as unknown file systems.

How can I boot to the existing RH install?

I'm not sure how to remedy your situation....but I was always told to install Linux second when you are dualbooting....Apparently Windows isn't too reliable when dualbooting with a non-windows OS...

Also, in Windows, I don't think it should recognize the linux partitions at all, I'm not sure though...

Saracern25,

That is normal. when installing window , it overwrite the MBR were the boot loader is.
To fix this, you have to boot your on your RH cd in order to setup back the bootloader.

I am using boot magic (and yes you have to install linux second) I am reading a lot about duel boot problems but since the last time I dual booted with LILO was with win98 I don't know if there is a problem. do win2k and xp not boot from LILO?

They can boot with lilo if you set it up right. But the better thing to is install linux second like lailoken said. Then put rh9 grub or lilo in the first partition and use the windows boot loader to hand over to grub or lilo and this will insure both stay intact. here is a how to page.

Thanks for the help.

I ended up blowing away the Red Hat install and deleting the partitions. I then reinstalled Red Hat and it's working fine now.
