Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

This is my first thread and being a newbie I need some of your wise advice.
OK - here is my current configuration:
IDE 0 (master) = Windows XP Pro SP2, 120 Gb HD, 512MB RAM
IDE 1 (slave) = Brand new 80 Gb HD - unformatted.
Here is what I want:
Install the latest MandrakeLinux Distro on the slave drive.
Boot into this only when I use a boot floppy
Here is the advice I need:
How do I complete the tasks in the "Here is what I want" section.
A link to a detailed tutorial would be nice.
Having surfed the web I am befuddled as to the variety of Distros available and which would be most suitable to my particular circumstances. Being new to Linux, I have chosen Mandrake because it seems to be the most popular download choice. At this moment in time I only want to spend some time playing around with Linux and get to understand its uses.
I want to get comfortable in using Linux before I allow GRUB to mess around with the MBR (is this what GRUB actually does?).
