DSL via router: DHCP or static IP?

Slackware10's netconfig asks me if I want to use a DHCP server or a static IP to configure my ethernet. I have a DSL connection via an Asante router. What is the answer?? And when it asks me for IPs, what do I give it? The same IP my computer had under WinXP (yes, I have it memorized :P)??

Thanks!

it depends on ur ISP

Has your ISP provided you with a static IP? if yes then enter that static IP.

If not then select the DHCP option.

DHCP should do it.

That way, it will get an ip address on startup.
That'll be the easiest.

dhcpcd

Slack would not automatically detect DNS servers for me at first while using DHCP. I had to manually edit /etc/resolv.conf (copying data from a live boot of knoppix). Try this or typing "dhcpcd eth0" (or whatever your device is) if slack doesn't automatically connect you. If this doesn't work, we'll need to move on to gathering information about your hardware/internet connection and/or running knoppix to see if it autodetects.

But, if he's behind a router, the router should give the box an IP nr.
Therefore it wont need a dns server, because the router is having the IP of the LAN...
