I would think you could configure the xorg.conf in /etc/X11/
basically, copy the good/working xorg.conf setup from running livecd to your installed dsl.
You might also wanna check out the .xsession in /home/dsl too
Brilliant idea, but I can't get it to work. I've loaded up from the live cd, mounted the root directory, and did a diff on the files in /etc/X11 as well as the .x files in ~dsl on both systems. No differences.
There is no xorg.conf (did a find from root) anywhere on the system. I have a .Xdefaults, .xinitrc, and a .xserverrc in the ~dsl directory (again, no differences), and very little in /etc/X11 (X, Xresources, app-defaults, fonts, pwm, rgb.txt, rxvt.menu, and xsetup). The only diff shows up in the binary file .Xauthority
But the touchpad works perfectly in the livecd, and not at all in the hard drive install. I'm losing my mind!
Edit: I didn't answer your first question. It was a full hard drive install.
