You need to mount them first, with something like:

# mount -t vfat /dev/hda2 /mnt/windows

Obviously your FAT 32 partition(s) is/aren't necessarily on /dev/hda2, so adjust for your setup.

Then create the directory. For example, if you wanted to use the mount command above, you'd just create the mount point with

# mkdir /mnt/windows

None: you don't type the #. That just shows that you're the root user. You just type "su", followed by your root password when prompted.

You might also want to add this info to the /etc/fstab file, if you wish. There's info about understanding and editing it here

Someone else will be better able to answer the rest of your questions.

I need to install the DSL on HDD the mount is showing as /mnt/hdc1
for my C:=\ (NTFS) which has XP....

To check the speed of your connection you can go to:
http://dslreports.com/stest

Sometimes people "feel" like their internet is slower in linux due to page loading differences. There are a few tweaks that you can apply to browsers like firefox to change how pages get loaded. Check out google for speed tweaks to firefox for more info if you are interested.

Good Luck!
