DSL doesn't fill entire laptop screen

Hi I am a newbie and just getting my feet wet and what I've seen so far I really like.
However DSL doesn't fill my entire laptop screen. I went to yvesa and am using 1280x1024x16 and it fills all but a half inch on top and on the left side of the screen.
Would appreciate your suggestions.

I am curious, why DSL and not a full-featured, user-friendly distribution such as Ubuntu/Mint/Fedora/OpenSUSE?

I downloaded Ubuntu and thought it was great but I tried and tried to connect to the internet with no luck and gave up on it. Heard it was much easier to get on the internet with DSL which made the connection the moment I downloaded it.

A good first step is to identify your video card. If you don't know, you can find out with the terminal command 'lspci'.

You should be able to use xrandr to change the refresh rate.

From the man page: (man xrandr for the full description there are examples at the bottom)

Code:
Forces to use a 1024x768 mode on an output called VGA:
              xrandr --newmode "1024x768" 63.50 1024 1072 1176 1328 768 771
              775 798 -hsync +vsync
              xrandr --addmode VGA 1024x768
              xrandr --output VGA --mode 1024x768

Thanks.
I have since given up on DSL but may go back and try as you suggest.
