DSL connection for SUSE not working
 

I just recently converted to linux opensuse and im running KDE on my desktop. i have tried connecting to the internet in SUSE but i have had no luck yet. but when i log into Windows XP i can connect without a problem. Ive tried altering the network configurations. but im not really sure what im doing. so if anybody can give me a hand i would really appreciate it. if you need to know more information please ask. im still new to this OS.

Tell us more about the connection. Also, did you put the DNS (primary and secondary) addresses? Try configuring DHCP. It could be any of these. Tell us what you did on Windows and on Linux.

its a dsl connnection. my provider is sbc yahoo. im using a dsl modem speedstream. all i did with the connection on windows was go into network connections created a new connection, DSL, put my username and password into it and just clicked connect. now im not familiar with linux at all. i dont really know what DNS means or what DHCP means. so if you can explain it to me i would really really appreciate it.

ive been trying to fiddle around with it. but no luck as of right now. everytime i need on the internet i have to logout of suse and into windows and restart my computer. its beginning to be a pain in the ass so all help would be appreciated.

Do you have a NAT cable/dsl Router or are you connected directly to the modem. If the former, then in YaST2, configure the interface device and opt for "automatic". The dhcp client will configure the IP address, netmask, gateway address and the nameserver IP addresses. If the latter, there is a DSL configuration wizard in YaST2 as well. The short answer is use YaST2.

For SuSE 10.3:
Menu -> Applications -> System -> Configuration -> Administrator Settings

Then select network devices. In the right hand pane will be one icon for DSL and another for "Network Card".

There is also a manual on the install disk in docu/en/opensuse-startup_en.pdf. Look in section 4.1.1. Also in the docu/en/opensuse-reference_en.pdf manual, look in 20.4.5 for configuring DSL.

i currently have my computer connected directly to my dsl modem. now if you can guide me through the steps i would really appreciate it.

Did you even read my previous post? Start with YaST2. You may be able to configure it using the DSL setup wizard.

Since I know,that it is sometimes a problem for the newbies on Linux to configure their conection to the internet,I will write something here that might help you,even though "jschiwal" explained a lot about what you should do.
DNS stands for domain name system;it is computer server which translates hostnames into ip addresses,so that you can enter "linuxquestions.org" in your browser URL field instead ip address(ex.72.90.123.123).
DHCP stands for dynamic host configuration protocol;when you want to conect to the internet you must get your unique ip address,DNS server etc. and computer server(usually owned by your ISP-internet service provider)takes care of that.
First thing you should do is go to the start menu(its called kicker,by the way),system-applications-administrator setings,then enter your root pass if not loged in as root,then go to the Network Devices,then Network card,and then in Global options choose "user controled with network manager",in Hostname/DNS choose "change host name via DHCP"and "write hostname to etc/hosts" and in the Routing enter your default getaway given to you by your ISP,click finish.
You should get conected now if something else isnt wrong or wright.

what is a getaway? not sure if i follow. i understand everything else except for "getaway"

Its a router that routes your trafic,you must enter the router ip address,ask your ISP,check manuals of your router/modem.

Okay. i tried doing what you and jschiwal said. but nothing is working. my settings were already set to those. is there a certain name i need to put in for provider? Connection type? or Device name? and what about the Gateway. I still dont understand what i need to put there. im sorry im not understanding. but ive tried everything. It doesnt make any sense. i have internet connection on windows but just not linux. its beginning to be very frustating. i only have 10 GB space on windows and ive used 9.2 of that already. so please help me!

Go in Window$ then "start" then "run" then type "cmd" without a quotes and click ok.Then in cmd type "ipconfig" also without a quotes,and then copy all here,also copy your network conections informations.

i need some help too.i did install opensuse but i could not "surf the web".what shall i do in order to connect the internet ?
