dsl connection

I just got linux mandrake 7.1 ...
I asked this question in the networking section but it didn't seem to help ...
Well, what I wanted to know is how I set up or configure my dsl connection for the internet. I have a networking box, if that matters any. I've looked through basically everything and didn't get anywhere.
I'm not all up to speed on the linux lingo so an easy explanation would be helpful .. thanx.

Mandrake 7.1 is an older version. It may not come with the needed PPPOE software by default (I don't know).
Perhaps this link:
http://sdboyd.dyndns.org/~sdboyd/DSL/connect3.html
will point you in the right direction.

EDIT: What do you mean "networking box"?

I mean I'm using a linksys DSL router , but I don't think that matters ...
I'll try that link, see if it'll help

EDIT: The network card stuff was not well written. Sorry if it was confusing.

once I install this, assuming it works, what does it mean by "Enter your PPPoE user name" I don't .. -squints- believe I have one. Ah I'm confused

Ah, this is hopeless, I can't even open the disk i downloaded the rp-pppoe to .. and no i dont know what kind of networking card i have, I've been using Windows me ~_~ until today

Your PPPOE user name would be your primary account with your ISP.

If you are serious about using a different operating system you will need to give it more than one day - though sometimes it is best to stop when you get frustrated.
Are you having trouble getting the file from your floppy drive?

vile_deceit 07-21-2003 02:13 AM

well its been .. a stressful past two days .. my comp practically went down the shitter and now Linux is driving me crazy, but yes, i couldn't get the file from my floppy drive, and ill have to dl the rp-ppoe again aswell

If your Mandrake 7.1 has a floppy icon, right click on it after inserting your floppy and click on "mount". Then clicking on the floppy icon should display the floppy contents. Before removing the floppy, right click and click "unmount". (If I am recalling correctly, that is how it can be done in that version).
If I am incorrect about the options I can post the slightly more confusing command line method.
It will seem odd at first, but drives must be mounted onto the filesystem before they can be accessed.
