Welcome to the forums!

DSL is an outdated distribution (latest release 2008) and uses an old version of Firefox. If this is your first Linux experience, I would recommend using a currently-supported distro. There are many choices; Puppy Linux is a popular, beginner-friendly distro for older hardware that includes the Flash Player built-in. :)

...or, go with Fedora LXDE, found here http://spins.fedoraproject.org/lxde/ - fits on a CD, and is about a fresh as it can be...it's a live CD, just pop it in the reader and power up the PC...

To concur with snowpine, DSL (for all its good aspects) if not really THE best starting point for Linux, as it is a "bare-bone" Linux...as in : "not much to look at"...

And, hey, welcome here!

Okay, my VERY bad...had to keep the age of the laptop in account. How about open BSD? Okay, maybe not aimed at a beginner, but the documentation is pretty good.

Grab a copy
http://openbsd.informatik.uni-erlang...nBSD/4.8/i386/
(choose the "install48.iso" file and save it, then burn a CD from it, I guess you know how...)

Full intro/instructions
ftp://ftp.openbsd.org/pub/OpenBSD/4.8/i386/INSTALL.i386

It's geared towards the i386 style systems, could just be what you need...

If you're still not sure, this site has a questionaire to help yopu find out what distro is best suited for your needs:

This thread is in my watch list, so I can help if need be...

Luck!
