driver questions


1. when i install my sound card using /usr/sbin/sndconfig, my system hangs. my card is a via mvp4

2. how do i install my conexant hsfmodem? i've downloaded the one with source because my kernel is not supported...

3. does anyone successfully installed an abit vl6?

i'm using red hat v. 7.2, kernel version is 2.2.17-4.rj

I don't know how to install at redhat, but i would use the sound-drivers of
http://www.alsa-project.org/
I think they run better than the normal drivers.
However you have to look if they support your soundcard. There is a list
http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/
of cards beeing supportet and their chipset.
To install them search for a Howto. I would give you mine, but I use Debian and there you can do it on an other way quite more simply.
I would also think about compiling a new kernel. 2.2.x is quite old isn't it.

you would need the kernel source installed for your
current running kernel to install that conexant modem.
the instructions for installing it would be inside the
tarball if that's what you got.
