ashwinkumar,

Welcome to the weird and wonderful world of Windows webcams in Linux!
Some people assume that because their webcam works perfectly in Windows, then it will also work in Linux. WRONG!
Some Windows webcams will work easily in Linux, some will work after a lot of effort and some will never work in Linux.

Someone called smileone using Debian Lenny appears to have got your webcam working here:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=754916

Somebody with Ubuntu successful here:

Somebody was less successful here:

http://forums.opensuse.org/archives/...-5-webcam.html

With any luck you should be able to get your webcam to work.
Give it a try but do not waste too much time on it. If all else fails, you may find it simpler to sell your existing webcam and buy a cheap Logitech webcam that is Linux compatible.
Do make sure that you check the Linux user feedback on any webcam before purchase.

Something like the Logitech Quickcam E3500 should do the job.

Have a look at the Linux-compatible (and incompatible) webcams here:
http://linux-uvc.berlios.de/

Go for the ones with green ticks, nothing less.

Also look below for a blog on the E3500 Plus using Ubuntu 8.04 and related customer feedback.

while i try installing the webcam drivers i come across a step where they ask me to configure my kernel and update the dependencies

'make [config|menuconfig|xconfig]; make dep

how do i do this? what exactly is this step?

i googled it and found some info.. so i have to download linux kernel src package and compile it ???

am confused...
