downloading linux

i am really interested in trying linux, fed up with microsoft. the problem i'm having is that everytime i download a version, i can't put it on a cd. is there anyplace i can download what i need thats not in an image? or is there a way i can burn an image to a cd that i'm not aware of? i currently use windows xp, i'm trying to load it onto a sony vaio. the only cd burning software i have is what came on the laptop(media player). i have roxio cd creator platinum, but it has compatiblity issues with xp. basically, what i am looking for is all of the files that go onto a cd in a folder labeled 'cd 1' that i can copy onto a cd. any help is greatly appreciated. thanx.

burning iso's

I used to use nero-burning-rom for burning iso's on CD's. You have to burn the image file (iso). I think its under burn image or write image.

mabey that will help you with your iso problems.

i thought roxio had released a compatability patch for xp.
this was a while ago, though -- do you have v6? if so, try:
http://roxio.com/en/support/ecdc/sof...sv6_plat.jhtml

you can probably find some floppy images out there, the trouble is that even with
some sort of internet install available to some builds, you still need to get the core
booted on your system, and go from there.

thanx for the patch for the roxio, will this allow me to burn a cd from an image? another thing...can i get the core on a floppy to boot from and go to an internet install to get the rest of the os? i hate to ask questions that have probably been asked before, but i can't find any specific info for the questions i have... if the patch works and lets me burn images, i'm all set. thanx.

Just copying files to the CD via XP drag and drop will not make the CD bootable.

oh, and yes, i prefer internet installs -- unless you get a distro right as it;s being released,
chances are your system will need a lot of updates. unless you install updated packages
to begin with

Thats it, i wondered how long it would take. i skip-traced a guy in a similar fashion once. i am still messing with the cd burning, watching an 18 month old boy all day takes up a lot of time.
