What are you trying to download?

Is it on a website?

What browser?

Is your internet connection working?

You are a relatively experienced user. Consider that the OP in this thread might have never opened a terminal and entered a command---much less something as complex as wget.

We don't even know if the OP has the internet connection working.......

I would recommend wget to a newbie. I think it's a good download manager and not any harder to use than most command-line utilities.

It can even continue a download that was interrupted without starting over.

For a newbie who very possibly has never used a terminal? No--I don't think so.

I'm relatively experienced and just reading the options for wget gives me a headache....

If you will not answer our questions, I don't see how we can help you......

One more time:

What are you trying to download, install, etc.?

e.g. are you trying to install some SW? If so, what?

What is the name of the file you downloaded?

If you are not willing to answer these questions, then don't bother posting agian.
