Download

I am trying to download Linux, but I can't help but notice, the downloads are very long. Is there a distribution that doesn't take long to download?

You can try ZipSlack or a few other 1-CD distrobutions.

Or, generally for a nominal fee you can get the latest versions of software shipped to you on CD.

If you're new to Linux, most of the distributions I would recommend are 3 CDs. Slackware is 2, and small distros like Simply Mepis or Knoppix only take 1. I believe that both Simply Mepis and Knoppix are Live CDs, meaning you can run them from the CD drive and see if you like them, and later install to the hard drive if you do. That could be an option. If you're on a 56K modem, I'd definately spot the shipping and handling charges to have the discs shipped to you. If not, just leave the computer on overnight and download.

MiniSlack isn't very large. It is a nice system, too. Very light. Looks nice with XFCE.

Ubuntu is a one cd distribution and it's not a live cd. Of course you can try the live cd too. They also ship you cd's for free.
