Well, I'm a newbie (more newbie than you I'll betcha!) so this may be like the blind leading the blind, but.............I'm using the 'live' CD's of the various distributions to gain some little experience with LINUX. I've got Knoppix 3.7, SuSE 9.2, MandrivaMove, and FreeSBIE 5.3 all on 'live' CD's.
I've tried the first three with varying degrees of success, but this is the easiest and best way for me, I'm satisfied.

Um, Ive Tried That Iso recorder and it didnt really float my boat, it was complicated and half of the time it didnt burn the iso properly. i use imgburn. http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download Its Free and it works. Just download the iso of the distro that you want and rum img burn and select 'burn image to disc'. It's Simple and it just works. I'd give it 5 starts for sure.

Also if you are looking for a distro, I would highly recomend Ubuntu. Firstly because it has a nice GUI and is customizable (My advice would be to stay away from kde desktops because thay all kind of look like the windows classic start menu, i recomend gnome or xfce or fluxbox if you are looking for a flashy break from windows.) The other reason i recomend ubuntu (Or more specifically edubuntu), is that it has a huge software center in which you can find a huge variety of free software. Otherwise, if you want something a litle differant, go with debian, because it uses that same structure as ubuntu and thus can run similar software (It runs *.deb files like Windows Runs *.exe files as installers). Though i can honestly say, Look around on http://distrowatch.com/search.php and select the chriteria that you are looking for. Search around, try a bunch, and get a taste of many flavours and see what floats your boat.
