Doesn't matter what distro I use or what desktop environment.

I use Firefox. I currently have 2.0 but earlier versions were the same. When I try to download a file I click on the file. A dialog box comes up asking me where to save the file, (I set it to do that earlier).

After I tell Firefox where to save the file, the file starts to download. It looks like everything is normal, but quite often the downloading stops early. No error message, it just says the download is complete. Even though sometimes much of the file is not downloaded.

And sometimes it works OK. Is there a way to know when it's going to or not going to work? Does anybody know what I'm doing wrong or what I need to do?

Are there some links which fail every time you try them? If so, can you post one here?

How big are these files, and do you have enough free disk space to store them? What kind of Internet connection do you have (modem, DSL, fiber, etc)?

The last updates of firefox 1.x.x did this a lot, but firefox 2.0 seems to have fixed the problem for me. Make sure that you install a new firefox2.0 in a clean environment, i.e. first remove the previous version completely.
If possible, use wget to download files instead. I know that is not always possible as some sites just don't like download managers of any kind!
Some sites are just plain pain in the butt - yourfilehost for one! You cannot do anything about that site!
