Question Does WINE transfer vulnerability

Given:

1) a security hole in MS Office which, when exploited, turns your computer into a drug-addicted mutant zombie clone from outer space.

2) a computer with 2 partitions. One partition has Windows 98 SE or newer. The other partition has linux (any free distribution).

Question:

If I run Word, within linux (only), with WINE (or something similar), will my computer still be vulnerable to turning into a drug-addicted mutant zombie clone from outer space?

It does to those applications that require wine. It will affect WINE itself, but nothing that is essential on your system, so for example, /usr/bash wouldn't become a Martian or anything

Cool

I think MasterC is right. Wine sort of gives your Windows application a "sandbox" to play in; the worst that could happen is that Wine will crash, or perhaps some of your user-modifiable files will be, well, modified... but there's no way it can do serious damage to your system unless you're running Wine as root, which you shouldn't be doing anyway

Thanks MasterC and wapcaplet.

I'm thinking of switching to linux, but I'm probably going to have 2 OSs for a while. I would like to minimize duplicating applications. I don't want to switch to OpenOffice until I can no longer use MS Office 2000. At that point, I'll remove Office 2000 and go with OpenOffice. Although I will be keeping Windows for a while, I wanted to try using WINE as much as possible instead of booting to Windows. I didn't want to run Windows applications with WINE if they were going to botch linux.

Now, I just have to find a version of linux I can install easily...

Thanks again.
