does this question belong here?

My question would be " i am trying to install linux on my server.I will be hosting my website from that sever. What would be mine best option (from type of linux stand point)?"

I thought this type of question would fall under this catagories. If not please let me know where do i post this thread.

i am pretty sure there is some answer out there already posted for this. if somone can point me there i should be fine too.
Thanks

i think that's the worst thread title i've ever seen on lq.org! even "help me please" is better...! :) PLEASE try better next time...

anyway, any distro you like the look of will do you fine. all major distro's can run a web server, so go for one you think you can use, and move on from there.

That is the worst reply i have ever read on any forum. Try to be nice to people. May be i should have asked you before i post my thread. i will try to do that from next time. Please try not to answer thread and help people if you think that the thread sounded worst to you. may be UK people have different test and i should have known that. darn me.

Just to let you know i had that title because when i registered myself to this forum, they have this link that tells us "read before you post". There it says not to post thread if it doesn't belong to particular category. i was just trying to help keep the site category from cluttering.

by the way fyi not all people are linux user so try to explain it better. your answer will not help the first time user (not saying cause i am pissed). how do i know which one i think "i can use and go from there". Isn't that why these thread (Newbie) is for so some one can be nice and explain better (like which one do you think i should try) to first time user.

Anyway thanks for being nice.

Hullo,

Don't worry, usrlinux, I think he was just being humorous there, not meaning any offense.

As for your question, the answer really depends on how you want to use your system. If you want something easy to install and that is easy to use right out of the box (or download, as it were), I suggest Ubuntu. I believe there is actually also a Ubuntu Server distro. There is also a live CD for Ubuntu (it's the install CD itself), so you can always give it a test run first. If you want something that has stood the test of time, is known to be very stable, and will work on almost any hardware, try Debian (yes, it's true, Ubuntu is based on Debian - they're still very different). If you want to learn everything about Linux, try Slackware or Gentoo. To be honest, any distro will serve you well. Try a few out, and see what you like.

Personally, I started with Slackware, was forced to learn a bit, and now just use Debian. If you're going with Debian, by the way, I really recommend a netinstall over a 12 or so CD download.

All the best, enjoy Linux!

Imagine if everyone titled their question "does this question belong here?" Doesn't sound very useful, does it?

that doesn't apply here. i think you'll find that everyone is a special case in their own opinion! :D if someone get's upset about being asked to follow guidelines they've already ignored, so be it.

Thank you felixc for the reply I will try some of your idea. Thank you Quakeboy02 for your comment.
Now this is more like it. Acid Kewpie, why don’t you learn from these guys? Quakeboy02 is conveying the same message but his is more acceptable.

Anyway have fun guys. I am sorry for posting this thread the very first time. I will promise that you will never see my thread again. Thank you for all your help. Appreciate it and I enjoyed my stay.
