does lynux have a defrag utility similar to windows


does lynux have a defrag utility similar to windows? ubuntu is the only os on my system

The common answer to that is defragmenting a ext2/3 partition is unnecessary, however, I can see a practical use for it. Suppose you want to image an ext2 drive with dd. It would be useful to have all the content moved to the front of the partition so you could specify an image size that excludes the trailing unused space. The image could then be restored to a any partition that is at least the size of the content, rather than the size of the original drive. Perhaps defragging isn't what you would call shifting the content to the front, but it's defragmentation tools that do this type of work.

Did you read the link reddaz provided? You don't need to defrag.
