Newegg has a linksys wifi router with 4 ethernet jacks for 40$. Ubuntu 10.04 supports linksys well, go to newegg's site and search Linksys WRT54G2. Make sure the modem they give you doesnt already have wifi built in. When you get the modem plug it into the phone line and then plug it into whichever computer is handy, your ISP does not need any specific OS to configure the modem, all you need is a web browser to access the modem, if they give you crap, connect the modem to your computer, open your browser, tell them to give you the default IP number and type that into the URL. From there all the info that their scripts have will work. Once configured unplug it from the back of your computer, plug that same cable into your router, take another rj-45 cable, plug it into another open spot on the router and then back into your computer and it will work fine. Your wifi will take a little more effort depending on your security settings. When i set up mine i had to tell the tech guy 5 times that i could access the modem even though he didnt understand, i had already reconfigured mine to use a different IP number and he couldnt comprehend that.
