Does Linux (Fedora 4) have a remote desktop feature?

I just got a dedicated server at godaddy. It's running fedora core 4. I would really like to figure out how to get a remote desktop. Is this possible? I can use putty to login and get a command line. I tried startx thinking a grapical interface would pop up but it didn't recognize the command.

So is this possible to get a gui remotly?

you would need to install vnc on the remote system.

TightVNC is one solution and probably best choice. Of course there's VNC client you can use, but can also remote using a standard web browser with Java plug in, which is handy.

Another is pcAnywhere 12. The CD includes files for Linux and MacOS X. I recently tinkered with it and got it to work on Mandriva 2007 and 2006. But it's not as robust as standard Windows version and not as fast as VNC. But it can work.

You can try NX Free as well. Supposedly faster than TightVNC and works well with Fedora Core 5 and Fedora Core 6 should you ever decide to upgrade your machine. TightVNC doesn't work well with Fedora Core 5... it has dependencies to XFree86 which don't come on FC5 or FC6 with a fresh install.

This link has an excellent tutorial for installation of NX Free on FC4 and FC5 complete with pictures. It got me up and running in literally 5 minutes on my FC5 machine.
