Does compiling XFree86 give you fonts?

When i try and start my x server with the command 'startx' i get an error that it can't find any fonts.

I have compiled XFree86 version 4.30 from source.
Does that give me fonts or do i have to do something
more to get them?

I really dunno much either, I just know that my X server depends on a seperate font server (xfs?) being started first as a seperate process, and without it X dies. But I dont use startx, it's all done in my runlevel 5.
