Does anyone know what the best distrobution of Linux for a IBM 390x Thinkpad

I have a x390 Ibm Think Pad... Would anyone know the best Distro for this laptop.. maybe with Compiz, Beryl... that is if it is supported....
And another question what would be the best source for developing the windows manager for a nice smooth futuristic look... you know for xfrc kde gnome.....?

A 390x, as in a ~400Mhz PII with a NeoMagic video chipset? Beryl is very wishful thinking.

You're gonna have to have a lightweight environment, like Fluxbox, Gnome and KDE are out of the question if you expect it to run smoothly, even Xfce is a little too heavy for it.

I have an old 600E that I used with SuSE/KDE for a number of years. that works, but it ain't fast, even after doing all I can to keep the speed up. But, a lot depends on how much RAM you have. And a bit on how much patience.

If you have 96 M or less, my advice is to forget KDE or Gnome. You might just get Gnome to start, but don't expect to do anything useful unless you have more RAM. XFCE might just still work, but apart from that you would be looking for a low resource, low impact GUI, and that may not be the flashiest thing around.

I already have Slackware 12.1 on the laptop I can run all the windows managers and it is set on high graphics such as transparency works shadowing and all the neat little stuff... it doesnt lag and responds great... 12.1 didnt come with gnome... What if I just use one like kde or xfce do you think the cube would work or no?
