Dodgy internet
If anyone has read my previous post previous post you will see I mention that internet is hit and miss. I've come to ask if anyone has/had the same problem and if there is a solution.
Fresh install of FC3 using the 'Desktop' install. Once I figured out how to get it to actually get the internet connection from the right ethernet card it connects but there is a major problem. Most sites don't load, ever, at all. nVidia loads fine, and Fedora website is also fine. Also believe Macromedia's site is OK but any other site such as Google or Newgrounds never loads (though Newgrounds gets the title and the progress bar goes about 1/3 of the way up before stopping.) We was using Mozilla and I thought possibly Mozilla hadn't installed correctly or something so I ran eLinks which does the same thing, but different sites don't load whereas other sites do load. We reset his DSL/Router combination but to no avail. Any ideas or suggestions? |

And lowpingnoob the connection isn't a new one, been up and running for a few months fine in Windows 2000. Plus it doesn't explain the odd site here and there working. Maybe Fedora Core 4 will resolve the problem. |

While it was Windows 2000 it was connected via USB to the Modem/Router combination (so technically over the network) and I don't believe a firewall was active.
With FC3, no firewall and connected by ethernet (had a funny feeling Linux wasn't going to connect through USB) |
Uhh I don't believe "FC4 may fix the problem" to be an anwser. It maybe a bug in Fedora, Mozilla, etc. Have you tried any other browser such as firefox or opera, etc.

The default browser is Mozilla Firefox 1.0 (I believe, I'm not anywhere near the computer right now) and I tried eLinks (text browser) and same problem.
|
Yes, I know that but I meant install the latest version 1.0.4 currently.

Heh I thought of that. So I went to the Mozilla webpage.. it loaded, excellent I thought. Clicked link to download latest version...
Didn't work. Site wouldn't load. |
this might be it. Does it have the latest ethernet drivers , or any at all. This sound stupid, but check.
|
because sometimes OSes have sketchy built-in ethernet drivers (mine work fine)

Err.. run a online packet test. See if you have any dropped packages. What ISP, modem, and router are you using?
Check to see if the wires are properly hooked in but otherwise, I think you have dropped packets. --Abid Kazmi |
