dod in wvdial missing?

On an old Laptop I have suse 6.1 (kernel 2.2) running, the idea is to use the laptop as a router to access the internet via 56k modem.
via ipmasqerading it is already possible to go online through the laptop, but I still have to tell him to start wvdial first.
The goal is to have the laptop dial up when demanded by the other pcs that use it as a gateway.
now I read that there is this dod tool, that is supposedly really cool, only it is not on my system...
is it not a part of wvdial? does it have to be installed separately? is there a way to make this work without the dod?

I'm really grateful for any help^^;

"is it not a part of wvdial?"

My version of wvdial (1.42) supports dial on demand. The version that comes with SuSE 6.1 probably does not have this feature. You can look in /usr/share/doc/packages/wvdial to find out how to set up dod if your version of wvdial supports dod. Otherwise you can download the source for the latest version of wvdial and compile it on your system. It is very unlikely that a SuSE wvdial rpm from a newer release of SuSE will work on SuSE 6.1.
