Do you get packages that break in functionally when doing upgrades?

Hello/Hola

This rarely happens with my PClinuxOS distro but I have two programs that worked well in the past but now, one program doesn't function properly and the other doesn't open up.

I suspect it's broken dependencies and/or system incompatibilities from doing package upgrades. ( Usually this happens when using bleeding edge distros Like Arch ). Not Sure if PClinuxOS is a bleeding edge distro, though.

I like the PC-BSD package model of PBI's. The PBI's are self contained with the files and libraries it needs. Thus, avoiding broken libraries and dependencies.

I already found two alternatives for the two malfunctioning programs.

to literally answer your question: yes.

other than that, do you actually have a problem or are you just talking?

if the latter, i think every user can have their own blog here on LQ.

Yes, but most times it's because of user interference. Like installing non-distro proprietary video drivers, or compiling things from sources. Or changing default configurations, and other stuff that might revert, or not update when updating the distro supplied bits.

I've had Fedora break itself with updates. Everything working fine, do a yum update, all of a sudden some critical piece is broken, 2 days later do another yum update and it's back to working again. It's exactly why I don't use bleeding edge distros anymore. I don't know how aggressive PCLinuxOS is with its updates, so I can't say which category it fits into.

I use non-bleeding edge distros as my main host and bleeding edge distros in a VM. I, then use the snapshot feature in the VM and rollback if necessary.
