Do i need to change the Kernel?

Hi all,

i recently installed slackware 8.0, which appeared to go very well. On the installation CD it has two kernels. 2.2.19 and 2.4.5

I opted for the 2.4.5 but to my surpise 2.2.19 was installed, although i have seen the module for 2.4.5 which must have been installed as well.

My problem is trying to configure my sound card, which a a soundblaster live. I am getting nowhere with it and seem to be running around in circles. I was wondering if i should somehow try to install the 2.4.5 kernel to get it working. This for me is a shot in the dark, please correct me if i am wrong.

I have seen that soundblaster live is among the supported sound cards but i still have no sound. I am probably doing something wrong but i cannot not figure out what.

Thanks in advance.....:)

You can't mix different version of modules and kernels. So you will either have to change your kernel or your modules so they match up to the same version.
You could also just get a complete new kernel from www.kernel.org and compile it yourself.

Yeah by default, slack 8 uses the 2.2.19 but includes the 2.4.5 as well. easiest way around this is to just install the latest and greatest kernel or what you could do is remove the linux directory in /usr/src and change the name of the linux-2.4.5 directory to linux so you know when you recompile the kernel, it will use the 2.4.5 definitly by default.
