Do I have two versions of LibreOffice installed?
1 Attachment(s)
Hi everyone!
Having read about the latest LibreOffice version, I felt tempted to try it out. I uninstalled the default version on my Ubuntu machine and downloaded the .deb from the LibreOffice site and installed it. The new office has since worked without any trouble. A few days later I decided to dump Unity and go back to Gnome. So I installed Ubuntu-Gnome-Desktop. It was then that I noticed two versions of LibreOffice on the application dash (I think, because there are two sets of icons for each office application- see the attached screenshot). Did Gnome install its own version of LibreOffice with it? Does it really have one? I don't know. Whichever icon I use to launch the app, the office however always brings up the latest version. So, there's no problem in terms of application errors. As I thought there's no need to have an extra version of an app and eat up my space, I tried to uninstall through Aptitude, but it doesn't 'remove' LibreOffice. Any advice, please! Thanks in advance. |
You may just have an extra dashbard icon. You should check exactly which LibreOffice versions are installed with your package manager. You can do this via the following command at the terminal:
Code:
sudo dpkg -l | grep -i libreoffice |
You can also check running version of app in about menu button.

I know libre office is install with the kde desktop. So probably.

And veerain, I had already checked from the "About" menu, clicking anyone of the icons launches version 4.4.0.3 -- only their build IDs are different. The flat icons bring up Build ID: de093506bcdc5fafd9023ee680b8c60e3e0645d7, while the Numix round icon launches Build ID: 40m0(Build:3). How can I remove one of them! |
Code:
sudo apt-get remove libreoffice4.4 Code:
apt-get remove libreoffice-common |
I say you remove the app which is rc3 (release candidate).

Thanks RockDoctor for mentioning the Synaptic :) But you say that's the way for the lazy! I'd say it was more tedious, but it actually gave me the peace of mind that every candidate of the package that I didn't want was removed.
And yes, veerain, I removed the rc, although it took away the beautiful Numix icon for LibreOffice -- now that rectangular default icon sits on the launcher, but I can live with that! This was probably a simple problem to resolve, but I learned about a great tool in the discussion: the command Code:
sudo dpkg -l | grep -i <application-name> Cheers! |
