Unhappy DNS issue or so i guess


hi guys..

finally i got my debian 3.1r0a machine netconnected and working.. but one problem now arises, i cant ping by name Eg: ping google.com (ping: unknown host google.com) it says,... but i can ping by name in my local network, i can ping to google by the IP adress (216.239.37.99) but not by name...... what gives

heres my /etc/network/interface file....

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

# The primary network interface
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
name Ethernet LAN card
address 192.168.1.103
netmask 255.255.255.0
broadcast 192.168.1.255
network 192.168.1.51
gateway 192.168.1.61


can someone help me, due to this i cant to apt-get update and install software

take a look at /etc/resolv.conf

if its empty add the line

nameserver X.X.X.X

replace the X.X.X.X with the ip of your dns server

thankyou alot skunkburner, that was the problem, the /etc/resolv.conf file contained the following....

search someadress.com.mv
nameserver 192.168.1.50

i changed it to

#search someadress.com.mv
nameserver 192.168.1.61

now the ping works with google.com,,

however the local ping now dosent work.....
