DNS how to setup?

Hello,

I want to setup a DNS server for my internal network (because of the NAT protocol in the ADSL Router). Now my DNS is working from within the router, but I want to try out the DNS from my linux server.

Can anybody tell me how to accomplish this?

I tried a lot of settings but when I activate my internal DNS from the linux server and deactivate my ADSL DNS internal connections are lost.

first DNS is my ADSL router, second the IP of my linux machine, so I think that's correct.

typically you would use the BIND server for a full DNS implementation http://www.isc.org/index.pl?/sw/bind/ but it sounds like overkill for what you are doing. what I do is use a much much smaller and simpler program called dnsmasq - http://thekelleys.org.uk/dnsmasq/doc.html this does not even require a configuration file most of the time, and just looks in suitable local places for places to pick up dns servers to relay to, local defined static hosts and dhcp assigned addresses. it's really easy.
