DNS for an intranet

Hi, everybody
I'd like if there is someone who could help me to configure a DNS for an intranet. The purpose is education ( learning young students networking with open source software )
My school is in the country without connection to the internet.
Our small network consists of six computers connected by switcher (8 ports)
PC1 will be the RHEL5 server IP: 192.168.1.11 hostname: soleil
PC2 " a Linux client IP: 192.168.1.12 " : venus
PC3 " " : 192.168.1.13 " : mercure
PC4 " windows client : 192.168.1.14 " : terre
PC5 " " : 192.168.1.15 " : mars
PC4 " " : 192.168.1.16 " : jupiter
The domain is: planetes.sun
While waiting to be connected to the internet, we'll try to use this network for mail but first we should have a DNS.
---------------
We tried to find a solution by our selves but we don't succeed ( perhaps because we are newbie and self education ...)
-------------------
Thank you for your help

Ok...if you're in a country without access to the Internet, how exactly did you post this???? Since you DID post it, I have to assume you have internet access, and can access one of the thousands of how-to documents, like this:

http://www.linux.org/docs/ldp/howto/DNS-HOWTO.html

which walk you through how to set up DNS, complete with examples.

First I thank you Mr Detective
I said my school is in a country not my home where I live in a big town with ADSL line and many facilities
Our school also has telephone line but it's used for voval communications
and every one there has his own phone mobile So Mr investigator your suppositions arer wrong and without logic and If you could help give your idea (eventually right or wrong) without making caculation please !!!

A friend told me in the forums we should not give our photo or private informations.

He did. The link to the DNS howto is very sound advice.

And quite right he was.

As Tinkster said, I pointed you to the information. Even gave you the web link, and as I said in my post "I have to assume you have internet access". Apparently, I am a good enough detective to find what YOU didn't feel like looking for. We're always happy to give someone a hand UP, but giving someone a hand OUT is different. It didn't appear like you did any research or any work on resolving your issue, just posted a question, and asked someone to do it FOR YOU.

Right...good thing no one here has asked for any...but you DID post not only your host names, but IP addresses for your machines. Also, before you insult someone who did help you, you might want to consider learning how to spell and use the language in which you're insulting them.

explanation and excuse

Hi, TBONE
I am very sorry I was only angry because I thought you considered me like a lier. Also I didn't insult you at all but I just said You are a detective.
beginning my post with thank you

After all excuse me and I'd like to tell you English isn't my native language ( I try to be clear enough to be understood )
The informations about my school network are fictitious and for a private LAN which not connected to internet so like the french says : PAS DE PROBLEME ( no security problem )

I give all these informations as a pedagogic example not looking for ready solution ( and why not : I am new in the world of Linux and this is encourage me to continue and develop my network better )
----------
At last excuse me if i did a mastake !
AND my Linux Question : Is it possible to configure a DNS for an isolated small LAN
Our second step is configuring a mail server in the same server
we aren't rich instructors here and all our effort is a voluntary work for poor young students.

For such a small network a name server is quite overkill, IMHO. I'd rather suggest to add all 6 computers with fixed local IP addresses to the /etc/hosts files on each computer. That way they all will see each other. As soon as Internet connection becomes available for the school you will anyway rely on an external name server.

Sorry, it was insulting, and you intended it to be so. "Mr Detective"? "Mr Investagor"??? Not many ways to take what you posted.

As I answered in my first post, yes. I directed you to a document that has simple, how-to steps spelled out clearly, with examples. YES you can set up DNS on that server, along with mail services too. That how-to guide is one of many that can walk you through how to set up simple services, DNS and sendmail included.

From your other DNS related posts on here, you say you're using RedHat enterprise...since you're paying for the subscription, you have access to both their online knowledgebase, and phone support. Consider using that resource.

Can you guys please settle? If you want to mud-wrestle
or point fingers, do so via private e-Mail. This has
no place on the boards.

Cheers,
Tink

Ok thank you more time and we'll try to do this job
N.B: We have installed RHEL5 whith a key number that we found via internet at home and so in our school we use only RHEL5 locally and no need for subscription ( after when we will be connected we'll reinstall Fedora or another open source software) but now we use what a friend gave us ( a DVD for RHEL5 and the key)
