Can any one tell me what is the difference between zones, domains and child domain?

could be incorrect but domain is <whatever>.<tld> zone is the area in which you have control of how that domain is resolved and a child domain is <whatever>.<whatever>.<tld> hopefully someone else has a more specific/better answer especially if mine is wrong.
