? Could you be a bit more specific? Do you own an ISP, or are you speaking of private IP's?

Cool

not quite... my ISP si a sdpd fck (sorry about the language). He told me that in order to resolve my host (for example the IRC) I had to wait some time in order for the host to propagate (????? don't ask me I don't know what it means) I told him to take a better look at his server.
I don't know what more to say... I guess he has to look in /etc/hosts or /etc/hosts.conf or at his named server (I'm not quite good at dns so tell me if I'm wrong).

To be more explicit:
My ip is 213.233.122.108
When I connect to an IRC server it gives me "Your forward and reverse DNS do not match, ignoring hostname. [213.233.122.98 != 213.233.122.108]"
My host is alex.tehnoprest.com and on irc it doesn't resolve.

The argument was very.... I guess I have to look for another ISP.

thx for taking your time to answer me

Wow, that's a lot of info, you might consider adjusting those numbers a bit to not show your actual IP if you haven't already.

Anyway...

What I think he was telling you is that there is a lag between the time when you add 'alex.tehnoprest.com' to your A record and the time it hits all the nameservers, especially your IRC servers nameservers. Usually (IIRC) I've never seen longer than an hour, however, it may vary.

Cool

he was telling me something about a week... he added my host two days ago. can you please explain me more about this lag ?

the person who I talked to is not the admin on the server... he likes to belive he is :)

MasterC 12-03-2003 01:58 PM

WRT DNS:
There are like 12 (or 24?) main backbone DNS "authorative" servers. These are all over the world. It takes a while for your new 'host' to arrive in their servers. This is the lag mentioned ;)

Cool

spank 12-03-2003 02:02 PM

if he didn't add my host to the record could this justify the message from the irc server ?
can this lag take up to a week ???

MasterC 12-03-2003 02:11 PM

This lag is very unlikely to take that long, however, if he/the company is in charge of your domain/host then it's possible a wait time they have (back logs and such). If you control your own zone, then once you add the info, I've never heard of a week. The most I remember hearing (and I believe this was in reference to something else) was 3 days.

Cool

thank you.... the interesting think is that yesterday the reverse worked fine... I didn't mess with my config. They say is my fault. I'm 100% sure that is theirs.

an off topic question:
1. 953/tcp open rndc
what's this what does it do how can I kill it
2. how can I change the time remotely from a console
3. if I enter an ip that is already asigned and that host is up is it possible that I "kick" that person out ? or I only get an Ip conflict message and that host continues working unbothered ?
thanks a million :))
