divx to Xvid


hi guys
does any one now of a converter that can convert divx to Xvid and mp4 to avi or something that can convert a variaty of formats please

do they have to be user together or are they two seperate packages

They are two separate packages and they are redundant. Use either one or the other.

Those are command line tools, but there are GUI front ends in google.

What's wrong with DivX? It is not used in Linux, right. But you should understand DivX is nothing but an MPEG-4 compliant codec. Every recoding reduces the quality, we are talking about lossy codecs here.
In short, if you have a file encoded with DivX then you do not have a DivX file. You'll get a MPEG-4 file. You can use any other MPEG-4 codec to play it back, e.g. Xvid.

cool but the reason i asked is because my divx player at home does not play movies that are divx but play Xvid strange but true

Then you have to change the FourCC code. Still no need to recode.
