DivX playback causes my Toshiba Satellite to hang

A friend of a frienv installed Suse 7.3 on my Toshiba Satellite. Since I do not want to have to boot W98 to be able to see the DivX movies I have, I installed Xine and avifile. The problem is that both programs cause the Toshiba to hang when I try to play the movies. I mean, time to switch off the machine and reboot.

Any ideas? The weird thing is that if I boot the W98 partition, the films play back fine....

Thanks.

it's possible that it's Xine that's doing it, cos i don't like Xine ;) Make sure you're using a decent new cvs version of avifile as well, the 0.60 release is a few months old now, so get something newer

try an alternative program such as MPlayer http://mplayerhq.hu i find divx playback is better under mplayer, and much more debugging info is available aswell.

Thanks, IŽll give it a try...

Thanks for the tip. I will try to download a newer version of avifile. The reason that I didn't go for mplayer is that I do not have a lot of disk space on the portable, my wife uses the W98 partition..., so can not install the necessary components to compile programs.

I know that on the page of mplayer they say that due to technical and legal difficulties it is not possible for them to distribute binary copies of their player, buy do you (does anyone) know where I could get hold of a compiled copy for SUSE 7.3.

Many thanks in advance.

divx playback is a very cpu intensive process, and as such it make VAST amounts of sense to use all the specialist facilities in your nice fast cpu, such as mmx2, sse2 and such. creating a generic i386 rpm or such like means you can't use these features, which will only go to utterly cripple the performance, as can be seen in Xine, which is much faster when compiled from source.
