Display Sync issues w/ RH 9

OK total Newbie to Linux and command line....

The setup

Dual boot
RH 9.0
WinXP pro

Hardware in question
Gateway Profile 4 (detail specs at support.gateway.com/s/Profile/Profile4/3501425/3501425sp3.shtml)
General specs in question,
NVIDIA GeForce2 MX 400 (detected)
32 MB of 166-MHz SGRAM
LCD display 15.0-inch TFT XGA (1,024 × 768) LCD color panel (not detected)
Maximum color depth of 16.7 million colors
15-inch panel refresh rates:
31.0 to 63.0 kHz horizontal and 56.0 to 75.0 Hz vertical

The Problem
While installing RH 9, when the "Graphic" install mode is selected the system works fine up till it actualy enters the "Graphic" mode. At which point the monitor goes out of sync. I did notice that while loading to the graphic mode it runs a hardware detection and properly detects the video card but lists the monitor as "unprobed Device". I assume that this is where my problem is.

With this in mind i did the install in text mode figuring that the problem would sort itself out when everything was installed. This works fine, up till i go to boot into the Gnome desktop, at which point everything gets a little fuzzy, and rather unsync'd again.

Now while finishing the install it does ask me for Video and Monitor configuration and I figure that I just have to play with that for a bit to find the settings that will work. The problem is that the only way I can figure out to get to it is by reinstalling the whole OS over again.

So I selected Text login and now the system loads to a command prompt, I know that there is a way to manualy start the Configuration screen again and select different options then manualy start the Gnome desktop to test them. I just don't know what they are....

Any suggetions, am I missing something? Heck even a couple nice flames telling the windows geek to go home...

Thanks,

Allen

as root, run XF86cfg or XF86config. one of them is in grafics mode itself, but works on most systems. if not, the other asks all questions in text mode, wich works fine

greetz,
.-=~ iluvatar ~=-.

ps: don't know for sure the commands are with capitals... if you get "command not found" try xf86cfg / xf86config...

No good.... Tried running those commands in the and didn't get anything logged in as root. Tried them in root directory / directory and even tracted down the directory where Xfree is and still didn't get anything outa them.....

I'm certain it's a cyntax error on my part, just don't know what it is.

# redhat-config-xfree86 start's something into graphic mode can't tell what it is though.

I have found settings that at least allow me to get some form of error message, saddly due to screen corruption I can't read it. all i can see is Yes No. selecting yes I think loads to Gnome. No takes me to another screen with yes or no on it. No takes me to a command promt while yes starts something that gives me the error below then goes to the decktop I guess...

top line i copied the rest is opproximations
ddcprobe returned bogus values
Monitor type: unknown
h sync unknown
v sync unknown

attempting to load with default
nvidea fx 2 (generic)

Is there a log file someplace that I can copy helpful info from?

Remember TOTAL newbie here. This is my first XP with Linux.

Thanks,

Allen
