DISPLAY settings in putty

i connect my windows machine to my ubuntu machine.
I use putty to connect to the ubuntu box.
I am having trouble opening up terminator from a putty session. it is saying some thing about DISPLAY settings

Code:
casper@casperbox:~/coremon$ terminator
/usr/lib/pymodules/python2.6/gtk-2.0/gtk/__init__.py:57: GtkWarning: could not open display
  warnings.warn(str(e), _gtk.Warning)
You need to run terminator in an X environment. Make sure $DISPLAY is properly set
casper@casper:~/coremon$

Hi casperdaghost,

From the output you pasted it appears that terminator application requires GUI. putty is good for running anything that does not require GUI but unfortunately the application you are trying to run requires gui. If possible you can download a tui version of this application and then you can run it from putty.

I agree with T3RM1NVT0R.
In addition, if you want to/need to run X applications under Windows, install Cygwin and it's X Server packages

I am runnig into the same error here.
I am ssh'd to a linux box from windows - when i try and open up the idle for python i get the error below

Code:
casper@casper-SX280:~/$ idle
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/bin/idle", line 5, in <module>
    main()
  File "/usr/lib/python2.6/idlelib/PyShell.py", line 1386, in main
    root = Tk(className="Idle")
  File "/usr/lib/python2.6/lib-tk/Tkinter.py", line 1646, in __init__
    self.tk = _tkinter.create(screenName, baseName, className, interactive, wantobjects, useTk, sync, use)
_tkinter.TclError: no display name and no $DISPLAY environment variable
casper@casper-SX280:~/$
I made this work once - I typed in some combinations of set DISPLAY 0.0 and export $DISPLAY
