display probs
Hey there i,m a newbie
I installed mandrake 6.1 everything is ok but i cant get video & monitor configured. I use Xconfigurator I can get it to set 800x600 16bit and 1024x768 16bit now the prob is in 800x600 the desktop is to big for the screen so i have to scroll the mouse over to the edge to show top and bottom of desk top is that normal?? now in 1024x768 it fits the screen good but when i bring up a window it has lines going threw the window and when i scroll down all the files or info gets distorted?? I can get it to work in 800x600 8bit but that sux , under windows i can get 1024x768 16 bit. My computer specs are f*%cking compaq presario 2230 hehe Cyrix 200mhz intergrated media gx video 2 meg i think it has the video card in the Xconfigurator list but i think the prob starts after that. Any help would be SOOOOOOO APPRECIATED thanx heaps |
Welcome to the board!
It looks like I've seen your post somewhere. I could be wrong. When you say too big, you mean Virtual Screen/Desktop. No brainer. Run Terminal/console. vi /etc/X11/XF86Config hit ? and type Virtual Make sure the numbers are the same as the first set right above it. 800x600 800 600 Do the rest hit ESC : and type wq Restart X or reboot Nothing wrong with your piece of hardward. Probably your distro is old and doesn't have full support for the video. |
hey there I done everything you said and it WORKED cool!!!!!
Thanx so much jetblackz , the help you get grom linux users is just why linux has such a good name world wide thanx again :) |
guess what the second time a rebooted the system would load X
i couldnt get into linux so i said stuff it and done a reinstall Got everything working again but not display , same as before but now when i do as you said it doesnt work I type : vi /etc/X11/XF86Config hit ? and type Virtual as you said but it just hangs , nothing :( any more help would be great thanx |
are you saying that vi hangs (the program that you typed virtual into) or X hangs?
if you can try posting your /etc/X11/XF86Config file here so we can take a butchers at it. Linux is damn cool at times but often you get a load of options that you have no idea what they mean or do. I don't know anyone who uses the Virtual screen or what it could be used for but hey. Alex |
You have to post your file here.
Open /etc/X11/XF86Config in a text editor. Copy & paste everything here. This morning I couldn't get to X, all I had was text mode. It took me a while to find the problem. Somehow my init mode was changed to 3 (text) instead of 5 (graphic). Now I'm back. Tip: Next time you think vi "hangs", hit ESC twice and type :!q to force it to quit. My prefered is pico, like DOS editor, but not in Mandy default install. |
