Display driver help

Hi Guys I am completely new to Linux and am still trying to learn terminals and such so please bare with me if I seem a little slow or a little stupid lol.

I am running Linux Mint 16 Cinammon 64bit 3.11.0-12 generic

My issue is that I am trying to install the NVIDIA display drivers for my card and keep getting a message

"you appear to be running a x server please close x server and try again....."

I have tried the suggestions made here:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...driver-401701/

and even logging into root and setting init 3 I am still getting the same message when i run the nvidia file

I am using ((while logged in as root) sh /home/*username*/Downloads/NVIDIA-Linux-x84_64-331.49.run to execute the file if that command makes a diffference as why its not working ((again new to linux not sure what matters))

Thanx in advance for any help you can give

......

also as a side note I found a few threads from ubuntu users about killing gbm or kbm processes to kill the x server but was unable to find either of those in Mint and i am not sure what the mint equivelent is and am not in the habit of killing random processes to see what happens lol

_____
edit: ok i managed to get past this stage by ending the mdm service but now I am recieving a error message that my kernal driver is incompatible with the nvidia drivers. How do i go about finding a new kernal driver

The thread you are following is no good. This is not how we install anything in Linux. Try this instead http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/1082
