Disk partition issues
 

I'm very new to Linux and am trying to install Fedora Core on an older computer running Windows 98 in a dual-boot format. This computer has a 12 Gb hard disk, and I recently deleted a bunch of unused programs to free about 4 Gb for the Linux installation.

For some reason, when I use FIPS to partition the drive, it can only find about 1.5 Gb of free space. I get an error message stating that there is a difference between the logical file allocation and the physical file allocation, and that FIPS is making an adjustment so they match. The Linux install will not work (automatic install--I'm not experienced enough to attempt the manual), I am guessing because there is not enough space. In any event, I get multiple errors in virtually every step of the Linux install, and ultimately it just gets stuck and won't install on the partition made by FIPS.

When I run the non-working demo of Partition Magic, it seems to see all my free space and would allow me to make a Linux partition of almost 4 Gb.

Here is my question: it seems to me that for the same expense, I could either get Partition Magic and presumably install Linux onto my existing hard drive, or, I could get a new 40Gb hard drive and use both drives, one for Windows and one for Linux. In terms of installing Linux, which would be the better solution?

well.. 12G is very cramped for a dual boot... but on the other hand, the 40G would still need some partitioning... (linux needs at least / and swap)
