after that a disk error message appear everytime i select the windows option on the grub screen...what shall i do please healp....Lot of files is endangered..thanks
I tried to install xp again, booted on win98 bootdisk, tried fdisk /mbr the only message after the fdisk /mbr is that no harddrive active...Then I use fdisk set the partition active. But one thing I notice is that on partition type it says unknown...Please help
what is on hda1, linux, windows ??
and also, are you able to start linux ? ( then you can mount your windos parts and back-up data )
and... i dont use grub but lilo and i guess if you use grub as bootmanager, it should be installed
in the MBR..
generally, such a problem is solvable...
mkdir /windows ( make a mount-point, this can be anywhere in the dir-tree )
mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /windows ( if it's a fat32 or fat16 )
if it's a ntfs partition , you probably have to inset the proper module
just type : modprobe ntfs ( if it's already loaded, you get a reply telling you that )
and then : mount -t ntfs /dev/hda1 /windows
after that you can access your win-part. and save the data.
when all is saved, try to install lilo ( some people on this site think it's better than grub, i don't use grub )
type: liloconfig ,
choose ' expert ' option
start with new header
installpoint : in the MBR,
add Linux part.,
add windows part.'s
install lilo
