Disappearing Partition?

This is tangentially related to another thread I posted, but I'm throwing in the question here in case the earlier thread is out of the buffers.

I had a partition set aside for Mandrake. I also had a partition for Win98SE. The Win98SE partition acknowledges that it's been resized, but when I loaded Knoppix from the CD, no partitioning was detected. Knoppix found /dev/hd and /dev/hda, but no subdivisions thereof. (/dev/hd was, according to Knoppix, completely empty, and /dev/hda was all Win98SE files.)

When I boot my machine and let Mandrake take over, it does in fact proceed through the boot process, although it stops when it starts talking about Kernel Panics (see other thread -- Mandrake and Red Hat 9 issues). I can't find a single reference to the partition on which all of that sits.

What's going on? Why can I see that there's a reduction of space for Windows, but I can't find the partition made to produce the reduction?

It seems you have somehow deleted your partition table. Do you remember it? You would basically need to re-create it in /etc/fstab.
