Disappearing libraw1394

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for your help in the past. Got a strange problem with video capture with my Sony Handycam. Downloaded Kino, Cinelerra and dvgrab (after a nightmare four days of dependency hunting.) As soon as I downloaded, configured and installed libraw1394 I was asked to "make dev /dev/libraw1394. Did so and I was up and running. But, as soon as I shut down the computer and reboot, libraw1394 file in /dev is gone! So, reinstalled libraw1394 in the same manner and was again up and running.

Long story short, I now have to reinstall libraw1394 and perform make dev /dev/libraw1394 everytime I reboot to capture video. Otherwise, I get a no such file error and kino reports that the 1394 port is not responding.

Anyone have any ideas what I can do to fix this?

Running FC4 on an AMD64 3400+, 1.5GB RAM, on-board Gigabyte 1394 port. By the way, lsmod reports the presence of these modules.

Any help very much appreceiated.

Bob

I suspect that udev is responsible for this. Udev creates devices in /dev directory at boot in 2.6 series kernels. what is the output of lsmod after you've installed/reinstalled libraw1394 and after a reboot. I believe, if you have modules loaded, udev will created devices for it...but I may be wrong.

I have kino and dvgrab installed but i haven't played with it. I'll try it tonight and post here if I find that same issue.

Thank you for your response. The lsmod shows both ohci1394 and ieee1394 installed and loaded. Both modules loaded, but the libraw1394 device file disappears. These modules are shown as loaded whether I have the libraw1394 device file or not. I suspected that I was somehow only temporarily loading these modules with libraw, but that is not the case.

Searching this and other forums has not yielded any similar problems or answers. Has me baffled..

By the way, how are things in Chicago? Great city..love it there. I am American but now live in the UK. A big interest in Linux here, but not many experts..

Chicago's great as usual...quite cold though. I'm not really a cold person. I've just installed dvgrab and kino will begin experimenting with it. I have a feeling that I'll run into problems but let's see. I'll check tonight and report back if i have same problems.
