Disappearing KDE task bar

Hi,

I am running Fedora 8, and KDE 3.5.9. Every so often, the main task bar panel at the bottom disappears, as does my top panel on which I have a news-ticker running. I have tried pressing Alt-F1 which usually opens the K-menu, but that does nothing. If I logout of X (using Ctl-Alt-Backspace) and then log back in (without restarting the machine) all is well again. This happens maybe once a month or so.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

- Greg.

This is one of those incredibly difficult to answer questions, because it's like asking why anything else disappears, and how to stop things from disappearing. The task bar process might hang, or be terminated, by something. Kdeinit might die, or the DCOP server may go defunct once in a while.

I would try an update:

linux # sudo yum update

If the hardware or Internet connection is slow, you might selectively update, using:

linux # sudo synaptic

In which case you might need to:

linux # sudo yum install synaptic

If you aren't in the sudoers file:

linux # su
password:
linux# /usr/sbin/visudo

This is the vi editor.

Press the insert key.

Scroll down with the down arrow key.

Find:
root ALL=(ALL) ALL

And put underneath it:

<username> ALL=(ALL) ALL

Where username is your username.

Hit the escape key,

':x' and Enter key.

You are now a sudoer, so you can sudo.

I once had the same problem on Mandriva 2006.
The KDE program which creates the panel is called kicker.
When the panel disappears instead of logging out try entering the command kicker into a terminal.
You don't need to be root to do this and a terminal can be opened from within Konqueror.
I created a "link to application" icon for kicker on my desktop; just clicking on the icon would restore the panel.
Eventually the problem went away; in my case it might have been caused by the Klipper applet which had been behaving erratically until finally I removed it from the panel tray.

Thank you Kenhelm. I will try that the next time it happens.
