Here's response I just received from tech support for the same problem. (My My firmware is V1.41.004, Part no. is 750.5435):

Quote:
Dear Veljko Roskar,
Thank you for choosing SMC Networks, Inc.

This seems to be a problem in the firmware.

At present we have no fix for it , but we are coming up new firmware innear future. please tell us the current firmware running on router & part number.

If you need further assistance, please reply with history to this email.

I'm grateful to you all.

I've been posting on several other boards to no avail. My experience is similar to those above, no need to bore you with the details. I've exchanged emails twice with SMC tech "support" who have given me the runaround and not acknowledged the bug. I'll add my voice to the rest of you who are calling, emailing, and demanding a fix for this firmware bug.

rjbailey, read tsuma's post right above yours in the thread and read mine, right above his. the work on the fix would not have started before 13 November because that's when technical support became aware of it. It won't be fixed by technical support, though; it will be the people who program the firmware that will work on it. Fixes are made much more quickly in an open source environment, but this is a proprietary product. so we may not see anything until the next ecition of the firmware is released.

Lippo, my first contact with SMC was over six months ago, although I could not have proved it was a bug in the SMC firmware at that time. So technically they have known about it for quite a while. The large number of identical posts here proves that it is a bug, and for that I'm grateful. I'll politely urge them to rectify this with a firmware fix PDQ.

Rjbailey, my first contact with them was well over a year ago, and I have had quite a few contacts with them since, but .I don't think that they "knew" about it until I drove up to Irvine and talked face to face with the director of technical support. That was on Novermber 13.

I received another similar but useless email from SMC after referring them to this thread and reiterating my concern over the print server bug:

<quoted text>
Thank you for choosing SMC Networks, Inc.
We are sorry to say that the Printer port is basically designed for windows
operating system only .So there is no settings in the Router's printer port
to disable the banner page printing in the Linux machine .Always ensure
that you have the latest firmware in the Router and if not you get the
latest firmware from the website www.smc.com .After upgrading the firmware
you need to reset the Router to factory defaults and then do the
configuration from the start .
You can try the linux printer config setup given here .

Users of Linux have to set up /etc/printcap and the queue name is "lp". The
following is an example for Red Hat
Linux release 5.1:

# /etc/printcap

hp6p::sd=/var/spool/lpd/hp6p::rm=192.168.123.254::rp=lp::lp=/dev/null::sh:

hp2100::sd=/var/spool/lpd/hp2100::rm=192.168.123.253::rp=lp::lp=/dev/null::sh:
</quoted text>

Lippo, I hope SMC is moving on this, because I've seen no evidence from anything I've heard from them. Kudos to you for going mano a mano with the Tech Support director.

Barricade trailer and firmware

Hi folks!

I have a European versjon of the SMC 7004ABR router and have had the same problem. Current firmware is v1.40.020

Am running Mac G3 B&W and OSX.2. As a curiosity, I have hade problems defining the printer queue: lp dosn't work, but lpt1 does!

I have also spent a few hours scratching my head regarding the job trailer!

A call this this week to the European Office, and I was sendt 3 firmware upgrades to test. V1.40.023 and 024 plus V1.41.01.

The trailer problem vanished with the 1.40.024 firmware! So they can definately fix the problem.

I still have left the problem that the router starts my analog modem calling as soon as the MAC is switched on, even if all network info is disabled. Any ideas?

I HAVE THE FIX !!!!

Not sure why or what happened, but i have the fix. SMC replied to my feedback email and they sent me a hot fix firmware update and so far it works great !!

this is for the smc7004abrw so I am not sure if it will work for other models of SMC gear. I am currently running 1.41.004 firmware and then updated with this release and no 2 extra pages !!

I am printing from a G4 running OS X 10.2.

If you would like to download the firmware please click the following link.

http://www.dberg.org/smc/

Obviously i can not be responsible if something happens to your machine, but this works great for me so far.

thanks
dberg

Dberg: Which model number of the SMC7004AWBR do you have?

I bought a used Osicom print server on Ebay the other day for about $15. I just finished hooking it up to my system, and--voila--no more nasty Job Trailer pages!

Your driving up there probably helped. They've emailed me a beta firmware that solved the problem:

"V1.41.00X -- Test version, bug should fixed."

Thanks for making that firmware bugfix available to us. I just successfully printed a single page document without the extra two wasted pages.

Now my 5-year-old daughter will be disappointed that her endless source of drawing paper from my office will dry up. At least the scrap paper won't have my name printed on it for coloring anymore.

I think our emails to the company were no match for our friend driving to the office. Thanks for making the trip.

Just found your page today after having the same problem.

In my haste to solve the problem, I installed the firmware patch, but now I can't access the router at all. I have an SMC7004ABR. Not the ABRW.

I can't even access it through my browser. Is there anyother way I can reset the firmware?

I'm running on Mac OSX 10.2.

Thanks.

Sorry to hear that ... sounds bad. Have you tried resetting it. Power off etc... yes I know you did, just checking, sounds very bad. Try tech support.... good luck.

To: everybody else

I installed the new firmware on my SMC7004AWBR(model 750-5435).

It installed easily, the power light flashed a bit then stopped, and GLORY OF GLORYS printing a single sheet NO LONGER PRINTS the 2 trailer pages..... wonders never cease......

Wow what a "Dead-Tree-Saver"(TM) that firmware is.

Great,

Thanks dberg

I bought an asante router with print server.

Hooked it up in and had the printer running in minutes. No problems whatsoever.

Anyone want a used SMC router with toasted firmware?

Thanks for all the help, though.

Vin
