Direct Rendering (ATI Radeon)

I can not for the life of my get my graphic card working properally. It is installed and has been detected by linux. I really want to be able to use Wine and related software to play games. However I can not get "direct rendering" enabled. Perhaps it is because the OS automatically installed drivers and even if I install the correct linux rpm's for the card it doesn't configure properally.

I have spent hours reading help forums trying to find a solution to my problem. If anyone could help me out I would greatly appreciate any assistance.

The problem is I just recently purchased the ATI Radeon X800 Pro, which at the time was the fastest graphic card available. Even more recently I have decided to switch over to Linux and rid myself of Windows.

I have installed Fedora Core 3 on both my laptop and my PC (2.4Ghz, 1GBRAM).

When I,
Code:

glxinfo | grep direct
I get back
Quote:

direct rendering: No
OpenGL render string: Mesa GLX Indirect
When I,
Code:

glxinfo | grep OpenGL
I get back
Quote:

OpenGL vendor string: Mesa project: wwwmesa3dorg
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
OpenGL version string: 1.2 (1.5 Mesa 6.1)
OpenGL extensions:
If that helps at all... When I go to the Display Settings it says my Video Card is "ATI Radeon X800PRO"

I am concerned because my laptop gets an average of 732FPS and my PC with the highend card only gets 320FPS when I do "glxgears"

I am sorry, I know you all must get these kind of posts all the time, but if you could help me out in anyway I would greatly greatly appreciate it.

Ok originally in my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file the driver was specified at "radeon"

After I ran
Code:

yum install ati-fglrx kernel-module-fglrx-`(uname -r)`
It updated the xorg.conf and lists "fglrx" as the driver.

However, when I boot up it says the following

Quote:

check for ati-fglrx kernel module [FAILED]
Do you have any idea why I am getting this and how I can fix this? Please help!

one more thing during the boot load screen i get this

Quote:

Checking for ati-fglrx kernel module [FAILED]

fglrx.ko module for 2.6.11-1.14_FC3 not found
DRI will not work within X with the ati-fglrx driver. Get
an updated/suitable 'kernel-module-fglrx-<kernelver>' rpm
from rpm.livna.org
Not sure how I could get an updated one after running that yum command listed above. If anyone could help me with this I'd grealty appreciate. I really want to stick with Linux and not go back to Windows, but I really need to be able to get this working.

Thanks everyone

Please help the Unofficial Fedora FAQ http://www.fedorafaq.org/#radeon I NEED SOME HELP FROM LINUX GURU's. I have spent 3 complete days from wake to sleep trying to figure this out. Please masters of the Penguin helppppp! Maybe this SS will help out. Obviously something is wrong!

http://xbuzz.com/ss.pngit says PCI in there, the card is AGP in an AGP slot just for your information

type lsmod to see the current modules that are loaded

to check if fglrx is loaded or not

xbuzz,

Maybe your ati-fglrx kernel module is not matching your kernel version. In which case you would have to download the source from livna.org and try building the module for your kernel. Instructions given at www.livna.org

Try the instructions on this page to install the ATI drivers.

Yo xbuzz, All the ways listed above are outdated (not that they ever even worked for me in the first place) uninstall everything you installed then head over to My Thread, Which explains exactly how to get it working with the latest drivers.
