Different installations from same CD causing repository problems??

Hi,

I just got Mandriva 2008 free edition. Something is very strange. I first installed on my PC and when I went too DrakConf to add software from the repositories, no repositories were available. The program was unable to download the repository list, too, when I click on add.

Later, I installed Mandriva on a Virtual Machine running under Virtualbox, in Windows. Imagine my surprise to find that in the virtual machine installation, the repositories were already available, with no other configuration needed.

So my question: why does this happen? I am installing from the same disc, so the installations should be the same. What am I doing wrong? How can I configure the broken repository list? Please, I need to install extra packages, help me!

Did you have internet at all? There is a chance that your NIC does not have Linux drivers (while vmware uses drivers of its own).

Re:

Yes, the internet is working fine, because I can browse the web, it is only when trying to add repositories that it doesn't work.

Without repositories, I canṫ install any new software, without new software, I might as well go back to windows. I canṫ even install the Java SDK!

I even tried using the online "repository script pages" like smart urpmi and easyURPMI, but when I run the commands, I get errors saying something like "error reading synthesis file for..." followed by the repository URL. I don't understand why it worked well as a VM.
