Difference between RAID and LVM
Hi All,
I'm new to this Forum... Can you pls help me to know wht is the difference between RAID & LVM concepts. I do not know even Wht is the RAID, LVM. Pls give me brief detail. Thanks, Karthi |
Hello Karthi_India,
Remember www.google.com is your friend. Just click on the link and type in RAID or LVM You'll get enough links to keep you busy for a year!!! Rob C. Quote:

Hi rob.linux,
I am really confused about RAID and LVM. I think both are one and the same. Then what is meant by creating an LVM over RAID. Please help me to understand exactly the difference between these two. I have searched for the results for the same in the net. But still not satisfied. Please explain briefly. |

Hello Karthi
RAID and LVM are to concepts of storing data. Difference in these two is the way the data is stored. LVM can be implemented on LVM type of partitions so that we can have features of RAID...RAID is basically used for redundency ( base concept ) which can be achieved by RAID 1 and RAID 5 ( and some higher levels )..LVM on the other hand provides more more disk space at any point ( i.e you can increase the FS space by adding more disks at run time )... Let me know if you have further queries. |
hi,
RAID are of two types 1) Software 2) Hardware As mether said , its used for redundancy. For example, when ur data gets lost due to corruption u shall get recovered by RAID.It is different from backup.A type of raid like disk mirroring writes the data to a mirror drive, so that u wont lose you data. For more details , like rob.linux said use google. LVM is a way in which u partition the hard disk logically and it contains its own advantages.Example , suppose u have 2 hard disk each of 40GB capacity. Is it possible for u to create a hard disk of size 60GB? u can do it by using LVM. There are many more features like resizing the partition in singe command and without rebooting that makes the job too easy u can deploy LVM and RAIDon same machine to achieve redundany and LVM advantages regards, Nirmal Tom. |
