difference between linux and windows

I am new to linux. Can you tell me the difference between linux and windows? dont use difficult terminology ..just simple explanation would do.

I kno the main difference
first one has everything later has almost nothing....

later provides not even an editor like vi which can detect keywords (u can just imagine)..

I was like you once and had the same questions - if windows suits you use it don't use linux - i will say if you have a real interest in computers their operating system and how they work use linux.
you can do almost everything on linux compared to windows and best of all its free currently at the moment im running windows xp and windows 7 at the same time on the same machine so i have the best of all worlds and its not bothering the performance of the host machine Slackware.
if your going to swap over for a test i would suggest ubuntu there by far the best to move to with great support on there forums, but you will have to forget all that windows is and have a very open mind for linux as this is one of the barriers i believe makes people jump back to windows.

a simple answer to your question is, its more secure more versatile it can be what you want it to be.
Windows is what is predetermined for you to decide from a list of options decided by a programmer & designer.
however a lot of learning is needed but i don't see why you cant get to a level were you then can return the help to others.
there is a huge community awaiting to help you

Linux has lots of GUI's, Windows has one:)
